HSL attends IBMS Congress 2017

8 Nov, 2017

The 2017 IBMS Congress took place from 24-27 September at the ICC in Birmingham

In September, three speakers and over 50 delegates from HSL attended the IBMS Congress 2017. Held at the ICC in Birmingham, and lasting over three and a half days, the conference was a major networking and educational event for professionals working across the whole of pathology.

With its multi-disciplinary format, major exhibition and lecture programme, the IBMS Congress 2017 brought together the brightest talents in biomedical science and technology. Representing HSL on stage were Wendy Leversuch, Head of Scientific Training; David Ricketts, Head of Laboratory Process Improvement; and Dr Keith Gomez, consultant haematologist at the Royal Free and HSL Head of Medical Training.

While David discussed the quality management agenda and the new POCT standard ISO22870 (2016), Dr Gomez’s presentation was more clinically-oriented, summarising guidelines and proficiency for coagulation assays. Wendy’s focus meanwhile was on training. Her two talks covered the key elements of a training programme, and how to develop a training strategy for multi-site services.

“There were so many different lecture programmes, it meant there was something for everyone,” Wendy says. “I predominantly attended the education and training lectures. A particular highlight for me was a talk titled ‘How to train the untrainable’. It was really valuable to hear how others address and overcome the challenges of training. That is what’s so great about the IBMS Congress: it’s not only an opportunity to network but also to leam from the experience of others.”

As well as numerous lecture programmes, delegates could meet with suppliers and manufacturers presenting their latest innovations and newest products at the IBMS exhibition.  “Previous years have focused much more on software”, explains Wendy. “But it was great to see more analysers in action this year and so much new technology on show.”

HSL is proud to have had such a strong and varied presence at this year’s IBMS Congress, and looks forward to continuing that relationship at their next event.
