Train the Trainer Day

HSL launches its own series of train the trainer workshops

Last month HSL’s very first train the trainer workshop took place at Hamilton House in Central London. Wendy Leversuch, HSL’s Head of Scientific Training, led the day alongside Vikki Moyse and Ashleigh Dadson-Butt. “The aim of the day was to support trainers in their role, giving them a chance to network with other trainers and share best practice”, says Wendy. “Lots of trainers experience very similar challenges and therefore ask very similar questions. Train the trainer workshops are the perfect opportunity for us to help answer these questions in a relaxed, informal setting.”

The full day workshop covered everything to know about being a trainer at HSL, from an overview of education and training to best practice around competency. “The role of a training officer got lots of discussion going”, says Wendy. “The terminology varies across different departments, but the role should remain the same. The workshop gave us the opportunity to clarify what the role of a training officer or training mentor involves, and set expectations of the roles and responsibilities around the various trainer roles.”

Other topics covered during the day included the HSL training website, IBMS portfolios and portfolio evidence. “IBMS portfolios and what counts as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ evidence generated a lot of discussion”, explains Wendy. “There’s quite a bit of uncertainty in this area so it was everyone found it really helpful to talk through different examples and to explain why certain pieces of evidence are better than others.”

Feedback from the day has been excellent with 100% of attendees prepared to recommend the workshop to a colleague. Wendy hopes that this is just the start, with more train the trainer sessions rolled out across the organisation in the coming months: “I’m really pleased the day went well and we’re looking forward to getting even more trainers across HSL involved. According to feedback from the day, 100% of attendees now feel more confident and competent in their role, which just goes to show how valuable these kinds of training sessions are.”
