Multi-site Training Strategies

18 Dec, 2018

Last month, Wendy Leversuch, HSL’s Head of Scientific Training, was invited to talk about multi-site training at the CliniSys winter national conference.

CliniSys is the UK’s leading provider of innovative, high-performance laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Its winter conference brought together clinicians, scientists and managers from across the pathology and diagnostic sector to share information, ideas and examples of best practice. Day one focused on disruptive technologies and digital advances within pathology IT, while day two offered delegates the opportunity to attend specialist workshops and discipline-specific breakout sessions.

In her talk, Wendy discussed the development of training strategies across multi-site services. Reflecting on her experience at HSL and TDL, which together form a network of over 60 laboratories, Wendy outlined the tools and techniques needed to deliver high-quality, standardised training across multiple locations. She highlighted the importance of HSL’s Faculty of Education – an expert group providing leadership and oversight across the whole organisation – as well as its dedicated training website. The website allows trainees to record their learning, track their progress and access the same educational resources wherever they are based, providing them with a consistent learning experience regardless of location.

With more and more laboratory networks beginning to adopt a hub and spoke-type model, Wendy’s talk garnered a lot of interest. Multi-site training strategies will form the backbone of many future pathology services, and HSL is at the forefront.

HSL is a progressive partnership between The Doctors Laboratory, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (the Royal Free London) and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH)
