ALL ABOUT HSL

Health Services Laboratories (HSL) is a clinically-led provider of pathology and diagnostic services

A progressive partnership between The Doctors Laboratory, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (the Royal Free London) and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH)

Our purpose is to deliver medically-led diagnostics, innovation, value and long-term investment to healthcare.

We combine The Doctors Laboratory’s long standing, specialist pathology expertise with the Royal Free London and UCLH’s internationally recognised heritage of continual research, development and academic excellence. We maintain rigorously high standards of quality, while also delivering efficiencies to healthcare through careful workforce planning, pioneering technology, and significant investment in infrastructure and IT.

Our new laboratory within the Halo Building is located in the heart of London’s globally renowned life sciences hub, ‘Medcity’, reflecting our ambition to provide an outstanding and transformational pathology service.

OUR PARTNERS

This is a ground breaking partnership, harnessing The Doctors Laboratory’s long-standing experience in large scale clinical laboratory operations and our NHS Trusts’ excellent environments for clinical care and teaching.

The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) was established in 1987.  TDL is the largest independent provider of clinical pathology services in the UK, with two hub laboratories in central London and Manchester. The two hubs support TDL’s national network of laboratories throughout the UK.  Their pathology services extend to hospitals, laboratories and clinical practice in the NHS and Independent Healthcare Sector. In 2003 TDL partnered with University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), and in 2015, formed Health Services Laboratories (HSL) with UCLH and Royal Free London.  TDL is owned by Sonic Healthcare Ltd, an Australian clinical diagnostics organisation.  The group as a whole are committed to providing clinically led technical and operational excellence for the doctors who request their pathology services, their patients, and their own staff.

UCLH (University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), situated in the West End of London, is one of the largest NHS trusts in the United Kingdom and provides first-class acute and specialist services. The state-of-the-art University College Hospital which opened in 2005 is the focal point of UCLH alongside five cutting-edge specialist hospitals. UCLH is committed to research and development and forms part of UCL Partners which in March 2009 was officially designated as one of the UK’s first academic health science centres by the Department of Health. UCLH works closely with UCL, translating research into treatments for patients.

The Royal Free London began as a pioneering organisation and it continues to play a leading role in the care of patients. Their mission is to provide world class expertise and local care. Established in 1828 by William Marsden, the Royal Free’s founding principle was that they would take in anyone who needed treatment, regardless of their wealth or background, the first hospital in London to do so.

In the 21st century, the Royal Free continues to lead improvements in healthcare and is proud to have some of the best clinical outcomes in the country. Their mortality rates have been consistently among the best in English trusts for many years. It runs a number of specialist services, including for liver and kidney transplantation, plastic surgery, haemophilia, Parkinson’s disease and vascular surgery.

OUR PROMISE

Our aim is to develop and deliver a sustainable business that delivers quality and value for everyone we work with.

We recognise that this must be achieved in a responsible manner and are committed to ensuring our activities have a positive impact on both the communities in which we operate and the wider healthcare sector.

To achieve this we will:

  • play a key part in the development of healthcare in the UK. We will listen carefully to the requirements of NHS commissioners and the people they are commissioning for, and develop quality based solutions that reflect their needs;
  • engage with staff to ensure they are treated fairly, enable them to realise their full potential, and have an active role in developing the UK’s clinical pathology workforce;
  • minimise any negative impact our business has on the environment. We have implemented a documented Environmental Management System based on the requirements of ISO 14001.
