Wednesday 19 July marked the first annual Biomedical Science Day, organised by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) in celebration of the birthdate of its founder, Albert Norman.
A laboratory assistant himself, Albert Norman wanted to establish a group where he and his colleagues could share knowledge, circulate information, and post profession-related news. 100 years later, IBMS now has over 20,000 members worldwide, and is the leading professional body for scientists, support staff and students within the biomedical science field.
For the inaugural Biomedical Science Day, IBMS wanted to celebrate diversity within the profession, as well as promote biomedical science as a career to aspire to. Members were asked to participate in a social media picture campaign, posting images of themselves at work. Supporters shared hundreds of photos, selfies, videos and pieces of artwork online, highlighting the variety of roles within biomedical science, as well as promoting the vital work performed by IBMS members. This overwhelming response ensured that the Biomedical Science Day campaign reached 115,000 Facebook pages and 50,000 Twitter accounts – an amazing achievement for everyone involved.
Here at HSL we’re proud to work with such a diverse and dedicated team of scientists, clinicians and laboratory support staff. With world-class facilities and an outstanding work environment, HSL is committed to raising the profile and highlighting the importance of biomedical science within all aspects of healthcare. As such, we can’t wait for Biomedical Science Day 2018 and seeing how IBMS tops this year’s celebrations.
