The Halo café has now been open a year, serving 120 very busy (and very hungry) members of staff each day. General Catering Manager Katarzyna Glen oversees all aspects of the café, from customer service to daily menus. She loves working with the HSL team: “This is my first managerial role, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to work. Everyone at HSL is so friendly and chatty. I’m very hands-on in the café and try to help out with service as much as I can, especially during busy periods. This means I can meet and get to know the people who eat and work here on a daily basis.”
The café is open Monday to Friday and serves coffee and snacks all day. It also offers a breakfast and lunch service with hot and cold meal options. When designing menus, it is vital to Katarzyna that she listens to feedback from customers. “As I’m in the café so often, people are not afraid to tell me what they think!” she says. “We are also looking at the results of our customer survey at the moment. We really appreciate people taking the time to give us their feedback as it helps us to improve and hopefully serve food that everyone enjoys.”
The biggest challenge for Katarzyna so far has been trying to cater to everyone’s needs and tastes. The café now serves vegetarian and Halal options and is continually trying to expand its choices to accommodate as many people as possible.
As summer approaches, Katarzyna is keen to make the most of the newly-opened Halo terraces on levels 3 and 6, and create a picnic menu that people can take outside to eat. “The terrace gardens are beautiful,” she says. “So it feels right to provide some more summer-friendly picnic options that people can eat outside in the sun.”
As for Katarzyna’s favourite dish on the menu, that’s a difficult one to choose: “If pushed, I would have to say the Chinese stir fry noodles or Jamaican Jerk chicken with rice and peas… they would have to be the winners for me!”
