Last week marked Biomedical Science Day 2019 – the world’s biggest celebration of biomedical science. Organised by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) – the leading professional body for scientists, support staff and students in the field – the annual event aims to raise awareness, empower patients and showcase the vital role that biomedical science plays in human health.
Healthcare laboratories are involved in over 70% of diagnoses in the NHS and carry out nearly 800 million tests each year – that’s 14 for each person in England and Wales. From microbiology to haematology, immunology to clinical chemistry, biomedical science is a profession at the heart of healthcare. This year the IBMS aims to highlight its many different roles, from specialist biomedical scientist to laboratory support worker.
