HSL cytology department provides a comprehensive cytology service to many clients including the NHS and independent sector. The department employs a dynamic workforce of highly trained scientists and laboratory support staff who work closely with pathologists to provide a high quality cervical and diagnostic cytology service.
Liquid based cytology platforms (ThinPrep) are used and where appropriate integrated imaging of PAP tests. A wide range of HPV assays are performed on request or in line with NHSCSP protocols.
Diagnostic cytology service is provided across multiple sites and includes testing on urines, serous effusions, bronchoscopy and other respiratory samples including EBUS. An extensive Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) service is also supported which can often shorten the diagnostic pathway and improve patient management. Multi-disciplinary team meetings are supported across all specialities by consultant pathologists.
HSL cytology works closely with other departments to support clinical trial studies. Continuous improvement and staff development is key to the cytology service. Through our Scientific Transformation Group and Clinical Consultant Group we plan future service delivery to keep abreast of improvements in technology and molecular testing.
The department works closely and interactively with primary care, colposcopy units and other hospital based specialities to deliver training and provide technical/clinical advice to service users.
The cytology department holds the IBMS pre- and post-registration training approval for completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio and Specialist Diplomas, as well as being accredited under Clinical Pathology Accreditation whilst transitioning to ISO 15189 under the programme of UKAS assessment schedules.
