Histopathology at HSL provides a first class laboratory service to its clinical associates. It has been designed to be a state of the art service, with passionate highly skilled laboratory staff, all based in a clinically led environment, with patients as the focal point.

The service is at the cutting edge, providing centralised processing facilities, servicing one of the more rapidly changing pathology specialties, spread across multiple sites, and by the provision of a safe and secure framework for preparing over 80,000 tissue sample requests ready for diagnosis. Ongoing investment in leading edge technology and systems ensures this is a service that remains at the forefront in its field.

We support a full range of pathology sub-specialities and these include; gastrointestinal, dermatological, haematological, urological, breast, gynaecological, respiratory, renal, hepatobiliary, head and neck. Our histopathology laboratories are heavily involved with high profile services that include bowel and breast cancer screening, integrated multidisciplinary haemato-oncology diagnostics, a large dermatopathology service, including frozen section support for Mohs surgery, an intraoperative molecular technique to test sentinel lymph nodes for breast tumour spread, and support for organ transplantation services for liver and renal services. There is also support for newly-developing clinical initiatives such as one-stop clinics for a range of specialties (including head and neck, breast and prostate).

HSL histopathology is also heavily involved and committed to supporting research. We are experienced in providing technical support for clinical trials and also one off bespoke projects. We have the facility to help work up new immunocytochemical markers and provide advice and support for those wanting to include molecular and genomic studies as part of their project. We also support biobanking of several tissue types, along with various national genome projects, currently, the 100,000 Genomes Project.

The department is IBMS approved for registrations and specialist portfolios and actively promotes the training and continual development of its staff to ensure we retain the highest levels of professional and academic excellence. Staff have the opportunity to experience and specialise in all the technical areas of the laboratory. We encourage the advancement of the histopathology BMS role through specimen dissection and beyond, as well as nurturing those with an eye for progression through the management route.

Histopathology is accredited under Clinical Pathology Accreditation whilst transitioning to ISO 15189 under the programme of UKAS assessment schedules.
